Artist Cynthia Karalla will present Negative / Positive, an exhibition exploring the unpredictable relationship between circumstance, perception, failure, and transformation at the Tooker Gallery, 195 Front Street, Newburgh, New York. There is no visual stamp that defines Karalla’s work. Each project has its own face, its own language, and its own way of revealing itself. The common thread is transformation: the movement of something from one state into another. With a background in Hermetic Philosophy and Alchemy, Karalla allows life’s situations to enter the studio and influence the outcome. Rather than attempting to control every result, she responds to accidents, failures, damage, loss, chance, and unexpected circumstances—turning them into catalysts for discovery. “Life enters the studio,” Karalla says. “And then I play.” The exhibition brings together projects including Flash & Failure, The Untitled 8 Days of Mona Lisa, Bleached, Cracked Ribs, Age of Beauty, and the well-known “It’s Craigslist, Toots!” Each work began from a different set of circumstances, yet each demonstrates Karalla’s ongoing interest in transforming what initially appears negative into something unexpected. For Karalla, It is a philosophy of living. She sees the world as a continual movement between negative and positive, with the meaning of each moment dependent, in part, upon how it is perceived. What may initially feel like failure, damage, or victimization can also become an opportunity to discover something that could not have been imagined beforehand. The universe, Karalla suggests, does not always deliver its gifts beautifully wrapped. Sometimes they arrive as failure. Sometimes as damage. Sometimes as loss. Most times as something we never asked for. The act of recognizing possibility within these moments opens the mind to new thoughts and new forms of discovery. For Karalla, without these disruptions, the mind risks remaining in a stagnant state.

Her work therefore does not begin with perfection. It begins with what happens. Negative becomes positive. Failure becomes discovery. Life becomes the material.
